I have always been a fan of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, loving their steaks that they cook in butter and bring in a 500 degree plate to your table, sizzling, like hearing angels singing in your ear. But know that, unlike most of the chains, they are not consistent from one location to the other. I like the one Midtown Manhattan, but do not like much the one in Wehawken where I went a couple of times and was disappointed by their steak: not a great quality and not well cooked, missing the char that they perfect anywhere else. So I was excited to verify my theory in Jersey City, at their location in Newport. The place is fairly big, a little dark, situated few blocks from the path station.

The menu is quite standard and I decided to go for my favorites. So I first started with their Gambler’s Old Fashioned, made with Knob Creek, Demerara sugar and bitters. Boy was it strong!

Then, I got their crab cakes. Appetizer size as they also offer them as an entree. The two pieces of deliciousness came sizzling, bathed in a lemon butter sauce that was not overpowering and let the jumbo lump crab remain the star of the dish. These are a must have: it is not like places where you have more filler than crab meat.

Next was the cowboy ribeye. Bone in, his 22oz of meat was perfectly cooked medium rare and had a nice crust. The meat was tender and tasty, coming sizzling, bathed in butter. I love it.

I decided to accompany it with their potato au gratin that is made with a three cheese sauce. Decadent and never disappointing.

Jodi being vegetarian was a good sport to accept a dinner there and, besides the potatoes, got herself a chopped salad.

Last was dessert. We decided to go for their chocolate sin cake. Well, I understand the name: this is like pure chocolate ganache. Flourless, served with a raspberry sauce, it was so chocolatey that I regretted they did not serve it with whipped cream to cut a bit on the dense chocolate. Still, superb!

So, overall we had a great dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Jersey City. Great service (I should mention it) and delicious food. And yes, I finished my steak…

Enjoy (I did)!
